Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Ajay Makan, and KC Venugopal on Thursday criticized the Narendra Modi government over the party’s frozen Bank accounts.
Congress leaders accused the BJP for conspiring against the grand old party, and intentionally forcing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to take illegal actions against Congress to stop them from doing election campaigns and advertisements ahead of the Lok Sabha elections 2024.
Former Congress chief and Rajya Sabha MP Sonia Gandhi, who rarely interacts with media now, said a “systematic effort to cripple Congress financially” is being made by the saffron front.
Sonia Gandhi said “…This issue affects not just Congress, it impacts our democracy itself most fundamentally. A systematic effort is underway by the Prime Minister to cripple the Indian National Congress financially.”
She added that these funds were collected from the public, and our bank accounts are being taken away forcibly.Congress will continue to fight even under the most challenging circumstances, Congress leader added.
“On one hand, there is the Electoral Bond issue which has been declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Electoral Bonds benefitted the BJP hugely. On the other hand, the finances of the principal opposition party – the INC – are under a determined assault. This, we all believe, is unprecedented and undemocratic,” Sonia Gandhi further said.
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said, “This is a criminal action on the Congress party, a criminal action done by the Prime Minister and the Home Minister…So, the idea that India is a democracy is a lie. There is no democracy in India today. The idea that India is the world’s largest democracy is a lie. A complete lie. 20% of India votes for us and we are not able to pay Rs 2 for anything. It has been orchestrated to cripple us in the elections. Even if our bank accounts are unfrozen today, huge amount of debt damage has been done to Indian democracy.”
